On January 30, 2012 Jamie Kelso looks at the road ahead for the new American Third Position political party. Kelso points to the 40-year history of the Libertarian Party and the 20-year history of the Constitution Party as benchmarks of the building of third parties. In 2008 Chuck Baldwin got 199,750 votes as the Constitution Party’s presidential candidate, while Bob Barr got 523,686 votes as the Libertarian Party candidate. Another measure of the size of the Libertarian Party, which is the biggest of the third parties, is the current listing in 29 States and the District of Columbia which register voters by party. That number of voters registered to the Libertarian Party is 225,000. Another measure is the 15,500 members of the Lbertarian Party listed as dues-paying (dues are $25 a year). It took the Libertarian Party 40 years to build to this size from their first presidential election total of 3,674 votes in 1972. Ron Paul got 431,000 votes as the Libertarian candidate for president in 1988. In that same year, the Populist Party, chaired by the same Don Wassall who is now Executive Director of the American Third Position party, got 47,000 votes for its candidate, David Duke. Kelso holds that the prospects for the American Third Position party (in which he is Membership Coordinator and a Director) are good. Abraham Lincoln is honored as “The Great Emancipator,” as a champion of equal rights for all, regardless of race, and as the president who waged war to “free the slaves.” In fact, he sought to make the US an all-white republic that would be “an outlet for free white people everywhere, the world over.” He supported ambitious efforts to resettle or “colonize” blacks in Africa or central America. In today’s America, the heritage of slavery is so shameful that many who honor the legacy of the South and the Confederacy deny that the motive of white southerners in breaking away from the federal union in 1860-61 was above all to preserve the institution of race-based slavery. A common mistake in trying to learn from the past is to evaluate the behavior and motives of people in history on the basis of attitudes and values that prevail in the present.
